Perhaps Boro's most famous kit of all, worn in the titanic FA Cup clash with Newcastle United in 1998, the diagonal red-and-white stripes were launched in July 1996. Boro Chairman Victor Green told the Stevenage Gazette he wanted a "continental look" and said: "Most of the players have seen the kit and like it. We had a number of designs open to us, but I think we chose the right one and we expect them to sell well with our supporters.
Sunbank, based in Stevenage, came in as sponsor on an initial one-year deal with the business having the option to extend. Green said: "Sun Bank is part of our business community and has already demonstrated its interest in Boro with match and ball sponsorship. Although our initial agreement is for one year, the Bank have an option to continue if things go well."
At launch, the kit cost between £30 and £38, depending on size.
