HITCHIN A V STEVENAGE TOWN
Hitchin A were at home to Stevenage Town in the Herts League competition on Saturday, when after a very rough game the visitors won by 4-2. The home club (which was very poorly represented) won the toss, and played with the sun at their backs. The visitors were the first to attack, and from a centreb y their outside right Carpenter netted from an offside position. From the free kick the home side ran down and Cox missed an easy chance of scoring by shooting over the bar. Stevenage again took up the running, and Carpenter scored from a centre with a good header.
Hitchin tried hard to equalise, and from a centre by Cox Anderson had hard lines in not scoring with a header, Parsons saving just in the nick of time. Stevenage went away again, and Field scored their second goal with a soft shot which Dixon ought to have saved, he miskicking the ball. No more scoring was done in the first half, and the visitors led at half-time by 2-0.
On re-starting Hitchin were all over the visitors for about ten minutes, and could do anything but score. Stevenage then settled down again, and Carpenter scored a third goal for them. Soon after the same player tricked the home backs, and with only the goalkeeper to beat shot hard, but Dixon brought off a grand save. The home eleven attacked, and Payne missed an easy chance of scoring by shooting wide. From a goal-kick the visitors carried the ball into the home territory, and after a scrimmage in front of goal Croft netted, putting Stevenage four up.
After this reverse some Hitchin men changed places, Cooper coming up forward and Payne going back, and Ebden at half-back changing places with Denniss at inside right. This seemed to put more life into the forwards, and Anderson (who was playing a good game) tricked two or three of the defence and was just going to shoot when he was fouled in the penalty area, with the result that the home side were awarded a penalty. This was taken by Payne, who made no mistake in finding the net. From now until the finish the visitors were outplayed, and after some good combination by the Hitchin forwards Cox ran in with the ball and shot, the ball striking the goalkeeper and coming out again; from the rebound Cooper, however, scored with a good shot. No further scoring wa done, and the game ended as stated.
