Stevenage are through in the Youth Cup
Stevenage Youth 5 Doniris 1
THE Stevenage youth team reached the last eight of the Herts Youth Cup by beating their Hemel Hempstead opponents in convincing style on Thursday night. On a very heavy pitch, they played fast, open attacking football, and now seem to be right back on the goal standard.
Athletic fought hard for every ball, and with their hard, accurate passes they quickly took the initiative. They kept this up for most of the game. The Hemel lads were a workmanlike side, but could not match the skill and fitness of Stevenage. They were in arrears after 15 minutes, and fell 2-0 behind by half-time.
The second half was a repeat of the first. The Stevenage defence, with Downes, Thompson and Hull in fine form, contained most of the visitors' attacks. Though Doniris fought back to 3-1, Athletic fought harder, and turned their superiority into goals.
In midfield Phillips had one of his best-ever games, as did Bowgett and Morgan in attack. The goalscorers were DAINTREE (2), BOWGETT, HAYNES and PHILLIPS.
Stevenage now meet the powerful Mid-Herts Sunday side Pioneer, who are top of their league, and are rates as the favourites in the Herts Youth Cup. This quarter-final match will be played at Broadhall Way on Sunday, kick-off 2.15.
