Youth team win Limbury thriller

Limbury 3 Stevenage Youth 4

AS the score suggests, this was a great game between these close rivals. The Stevenage youth side came out on top to complete a Chiltern League double over Limbury.

Stevenage started off well, and resisted some early pressure from the Limbury forwards, who were led by Ken Adair, the former Luton Town apprentice. The defence, well marshalled by Downes and Hull, played steadily.

It was left back HULL who gave Athletic the lead with a powerful free kick from outside the box after a great move involving Haynes, Bowgett and Butcher was stopped by a foul. Stevenage were taking the upper hand, and MORGAN made it 2-0.

This was first-class football, with fast passing and intelligent running. In midfield, Phillips and Haynes were dominant, while Bowgett and Butcher continued their recent improvement. DAINTREE was leading the line well, and the centre forward made it 3-0 just before the interval.

After the break, Limbury fought back, though some of their tactics were rather questionable. Midway through the half, Thompson, who had a grand game, was a little unlucky to give away a penalty when he dived at the feet of a Limbury forward. He got his fingers to the spot kick but could not divert it.

This was the signal for a frantic fight-back by Limbury, as Stevenage began to feel the effects of Thursday's cup match. The home side scored their second from a corner, and then made it 3-3 with ten minutes to go.

Athletic were determined not to concede a point, and summoned their last reserves of energy to storm into the attack. The desperate defence gave away one free kick too many, and PHILLIPS cracked home the winner.
