STEVENAGE TOWN V OLD DAGMARIANS

On Saturday Stevenage Town received a visit from the Old Dagmarians from Hatfield, and for this season gave their record performance, winning with a clear margin of four goals, their opponents failing to score. Ground and weather were alike just as bad as they could be, but in spite of this it was not difficult to discover which was the better team on the day's form. The home side seemed to have suddenly come to a good understanding, and played to win.

Kicking down the field and against the strong wind, hail and rain, Stevenage were quite able to hold their own, and were more often than not the aggressors. Parsons had several good shots to deal with, which he did successfully, and it seemed as though there was going to be a clean sheet for the first half until combining nicely the home forwards winged the ball, and Carpenter rushed up towards his opponents' goal to receive the pass which was to follow, and although he received in a palpably offside position the referee allowed the "goal" that he scored. The effort deserved to succeed, but the general opinion is that it was an offs-side one.

The second half was quite an eye-opener to the few spectators present, some of whom seemed to find it hard to think that it was Stevenage Town they were watching; and this not because they were opposed by a weak side, for the visitors were at extra strength. The home team soon made tracks for the top of the field and remained there most of the time, the visitors only occasionally breaking away. Crouch, Field and Carpenter each added one to the first half score. Field's goal was a brilliant one, although from a class football point of view he ought not to have done what he did. Playing at full-back he secured the ball and took it right through the field, finished up by fairly beating the goalkeeper with a shot that he hardly saw, and consequently could not possibly save.

Taken altogether it was one of the best games that Stevenage have played this season, both the defence and attack being consistent and persistent. The visitors played a hard trying game throughout, and although they deserved to score at least once. They were for the most part unable to penetrate the home defence. The brothers Scott shone most conspicuously, E. Scott in particular working like half-a-dozen men.

Of the home team every man played well. Ansell was at his best, and so really was every other man. Lovelace at centre-half being a surprise not only to the spectators but to his opponents also. Pickett at outside left was responsible for a lot of the good work, his centreing being very accurately judged. This is the first season that he has played for the premier eleven, and his form quite justified his inclusion.
