I cannot remember when I last found it so difficult to report on a Boro’ performance. Today’s trip to Hayes was a complete non-event. I can only imagine the game confirmed Boro’s starting line-up for next weeks big kick-off at Dagenham.
Attitude and application were sadly missing from those fringe players who were surely playing for their place next week and Justin Gregory apart the rest were nowhere on today’s showing.
Starting with a 4-4-2 formation it was the pace of Shaun Batt that looked to unlock the home defence, although scintillating pace is great if there is a decent cross at the end of it, but sadly not today.
With the game going nowhere Andy Woodman fumbled a cross before Hayes went ahead on 23 minutes. The lively front pairing of Bruno Mendonca and Josh SCOTT combined on the edge of the box to allow the latter to get of a shot past Woodmans left.
Boro’s only reply came from Craig McAllister who got on the end of a Jamie Gould free kick to volley a soft shot into Andy Goldman’s arms.
The second period opened with Woodman being forced into a one handed save from Scott as the game returned to the aimless hoofing that was so prevalent in the first half. The main concern must be the lack of desire in all areas which failed to produce any goal mouth activity of note, while the opposition did at least look up for the match and earned their result.
Gregory’s surge down the left and cut inside, his shot being deflected for a corner was a rare foray before Boro’ went further behind in the 59th minute. The defence somehow disintegrated allowing SCOTT to race through and get his shot away past the onrushing Woodman.
Davin Warner almost made it three when breaking down the right his shot passing the right side of the far post for Boro’, but some good fortune did extend the lead in the 77th minute. Gregory won the heading duel but lost out on the bounce, the cross found Abdul YOKI alone in the 6 yard box to give Lee Farrow no chance.
It was disappointing to see Barry Laker limp off after 64 minutes, but a return to a 3-5-2 formation and Jon Brady adding some bite in midfield made you think of what might have been. However, today will have been a test of character for the Manager and will surely make his task easier come two o’clock next Saturday.
