STEVENAGE TOWN V FRIERN BARNET

Played at Stevenage Town on Saturday. The visitors won the toss, and the home team kicked up the ball. The game was fairly even for a quarter of an hour, during which period both teams should have scored. Then Lane with a dropping shot registered the first goal of the match. After the visitors had equalised, with a good shot from the inside right, a fine piece of combination in which Field, Carpenter and Powdrill were prominent ended on the last named netting a shot just like Lane's. Stevenage kept up the pressure, and Field quickly put on number three with the best shot of the day; he tricked both backs and finished by crashing the ball into the net far out of reach of the goalkeeper.

With a lead of two goals Stevenage eased up a bit, and the visitors' centre receiving a pass while standing just in fornt of Parsons, yards off-side, netted the ball, Parsons not trying to save the shot; and to everyone's astonishment the referee poiinted to the centre of the field. Soon afterwards half-time sounded, with the score 3-2 in favour of Stevenage.

The second half was even more keenly contested than the first. he whistle was very often blown for off-side, real or imaginary, the home side being the greater offenders in this respect. The visitors, again through their left wing, were first to add to their score, the centre man again being the finisher after what seemed to be an off-side pass had been given him. The final goal of the game was scored by Nye, who dropped a shot in almost from the halfway line, the custodian again being at fault in judgment.

It was by far the best game of the present season on the part of Stevenage Town. The forwards seemed to understand one another better, and their combination showed decided improvement. Powdrill, a young player new to the team, is a very promising acquisition; and Field and he worked well together. Lane, one of the old hands, also played smart football. All the defence was sound, Ansell at back playing a good game, although rather inclined to kick out. Harris, his partner, was from the reserves, and he played up well, although perhaps a little nervous. If Stevenage continue to show this form they will very speedily gain more support.

The game was, with an exception or two on the off-side question, well refereed by Mr. C. L. Snow.
