STEVENAGE TOWN V HITCHIN BLUE CROSS BRIGADE
Stevenage Town were able to add one more point to their league score at the expense of Hitchin Blue Cross on Saturday, playing at home, though without Litchfield and Wray. From the kick-off the ball was taken straight into the visitors' quarters, and in a couple of minutes Lovelace scored from long range with a shot that just got under the bar.
This seemed to put a good deal of vigour into both teams. The Brigade men once had an empty goal at their mercy and then muffed the chance, and before the close of the first half they threw away another good one. At last, however, they drew level after a nice bit of play in midfield, Foster putting on the finishing touch.
The second half was of greater interest than the first, the game improving towards the end. Both goals were threatened, and a third time did the visitors allow an easy chance to slip by, their inside left kicking over the bar when almost on the goal-line. Then Field from about a 40 yards range put in a lightning shot which travelled a bit wide, and from a very acute angle Carpenter sent the ball between the goalkeeper, who rushed out to save, and the goal-post. It was a fine goal, as there could not have been many inches to spare at the angle from which the shot was made.
Soon afterwards Carpenter again looked like scoring, but Impey brought off a splendid save. The Brigade replied by working the ball up, and from a pass to the left Impey made the score level once more. The Stevenage men played better than usual, although still weak. Bird, Field and Carpenter at back, half and forward respectively being the most conspicuous of the side. For the visitors Sharp at back was a long way in front of the rest, getting his team out of difficulties repeatedly.
