STEVENAGE TOWN RESERVES V WELWYN
This Junior Cup-tie was played at Stevenage on Saturday. Stevenage won the toss and set the visitors to kick against a strong wind. For the first fifteen minutes play was very even. Then Stevenage worked through and called on Hulse and Agar in turn to clear. Males getting possession passed to the centre, but "Ranji" put the ball over the bar. From the goal kick Stevenage got away, and after sundry passes in front of goal Roberts netted with an easy shot. Stevenage did not long hold the lead, however. A pass from Towers led to a scrimmage from which Ward scored. The visitors still pressed, and in a short time two goals were added to their score by Thody. Hands against Stevenage was the cause of a penalty-kick, with which Thody scored a fourth goal, by which number the visitors lead at half time, after the game had been stopped by a heavy shower.
After change of ends Welwyn had the greater part of the play, scarcely letting the home team cross the half-way line; yet with all this not one of them could score, chance after chance being missed. Towards the finish Leggett played the ball into his own goal, and so the game ended - Welwyn, 5; Stevenage, 1.
Few spectators witnessed the match, and it is no; to be wondered at considering the distance and the condition of the road leading to the field.
For Stevenage Hill in goal made some good saves. Forward, Roberts was very good, and the brothers Austin worked well on the right, showing good combination. For Welwyn Ashby in goal was safe. Agar proved the best back on the field, and was the mainstay of the team. All the half-backs (Bird especially) were very good, giving the opposing forwards little scope. In the forward line there was not much choice, all working well in combination, although Thody and Males should have scored on several occasions.
