Youth team roar into the final
Stevenage Youth 14, Campton 0
AS the score suggests, this Chiltern League Cup semi-final was a one-horse race, and in fact many people wondered how Campton managed to get so far in the competition.
Campton did a giant-killing act in the quarter-finals, beating Icknield. But their hopes of a repeat performance against the Stevenage Youth side were shattered in the first 15 minutes of the game, when they found themselves 3-0 down.
The Stevenage lads gave a display comparable with their early-season form. They fought for every ball, kept the play open, and shot for goal at every opportunity.
Campton, though they were outclassed, fought hard, and showed they were a very sporting side. There were very few fouls in the match. But the gap between the Division Two club and their Division One hosts became more and more apparent a the game went on.
The Campton goalkeeper gave a courageous display, but his lack of inches was a handicap in the muddy conditions. For Athletic, it was difficult to single out any individual. Every player was running and working for the team, and with more of this Stevenage should snap out of a bad spell that has plagued them in recent weeks.
This impressive win should give Stevenage great confidence for their Herts Youth Cup match at Broadhall Way tonight (Thursday) against Donaris, the Hemel Hempstead side who won the county under-16 cup last season.
