HITCHIN TOWN V STEVENAGE TOWN
Hitchin Town played their first match in the Herts Senior Cup competition for the season on Saturday, when they had Stevenage Town for opponents. A week previously Stevenage had beaten the Town Reserves 4-2, and they perhaps hoped to run the first team to a goal or two on the strength of that performance. If so the result must have been very disappointing to them, the home side winning with great ease by 8-2.
Hitchin pressed at the start; then in a breakaway by the visitors Carpenter was fouled by Allen close in, and Field netted from the penalty kick. The home team soon equalised by Taylor, and obtained the lead through Bird miskicking. Afterwards Stevenage were quite outplayed, Grimes scoring two pretty goals after excellent combination, half-time arriving with the score - Hitchin, 4; Stevenage, 1. Meanwhile Albon had missed a penalty for a foul on Taylor.
On resuming the visitors made a better show for a time, Field scoring smartly from a corner. This livened matters up considerably. The home forwards and halves combined beautifully against a weak defence, Taylor showing grand form in the centre, and the next three goals came from his foot, one being the result of a fine individual effort and the others from smart passes by Cannon and Furr. The scoring was completed by Cooper running through the defence and beating Parsons with a hard drive. The final score was - Hitchin, 8; Stevenage, 2.
The home team were far too clever for the opposition, of whom only Parsons and Field were prominent. Leggett was fair at times, but there was an utter lack of combination throughout. The Hitchin defence had an easy task in frustrating the spasmodic attacks of the visitors, while the halves and forwards played beautifully together. Hales was the pick of the middle line, and in the front division Taylor made an ideal centre and was the best man on the side.
