Stripes lose eight goal thriller
Barnet 5 Stevenage Town 3
STEVENAGE TOWN will not be relegated at the end of the season because, in plain language, they are much too good for the Southern League First Division, writes Kit Galer.
They more than proved this to the 2,479 spectators at Barnet on Saturday with exciting attacking football, non-stop effort and three magnificent second-half goals that kept the league leaders at full stretch right up to the final whistle.
Straight from the kick-off, Stripes swept into the attack and Robin Chandler twice went close in the first three minutes. Play was all in the Barnet half for 10 minutes and then in their first sortie up the sloping pitch the home team scored. Wing half King slipped the ball inside a Stripes defender for EASON to hit past Ray Peacock.
Eason looked suspiciously off-side but nobody protested, and Stevenage quickly forgot all about it as Barnet scored again. Winger Anderson took the ball right to the goal line and as Peacock scurried out of goal to dive at his feet he centred straight to the head of SEARLE who nodded it in. Blame Peacock perhaps for committing himself at least 10 yards from goal but where was the defender marking Anderson?
Stripes appeared shaken but the forwards continued to work hard and chase everything. Chandler hit a post and was unlucky not to win a penalty when two Barnet players tripped him. Referee Mr. B. Chapman waved play on.
Six minutes before half-time Barnet eluded the Stevenage defence again and EASON wandered past three white shirted players before cracking in number three.
The second half started with Stevenage attacking again and this time the tireless Chandler got the reward he deserved. Pratt floated a high ball into the centre and CHANDLER leapt to head past Goymer.
Unfortunately any thoughts of saving the game were dashed by the sheer power of the Barnet forwards as first FIGG (61 minutes) hit an unstoppable shot and then SEARLE (64 minutes) wriggled through the defence for Barnet's fifth.
Then in the last 10 minutes came the Stevenage revival. Summoning up strength they ploughed up the slope, outran the tall Barnet defence and scored two fine goals.
A free kick, after John Mills had been fouled, was backheeled by Johnny Brooks and WALKER shot hard from the edge of the area into the corner of the net.
Then in the dying seconds Robin Chandler was on the spot again when he fought off two tackles and shot from a very narrow angle past Goymer. The crowd thought the ball had gone wide but CHANDLER, jumping for joy told them otherwise.
