STEVENAGE TOWN V HERTFORD HORNS

On Saturday Stevenage Town visited Hertford for a friendly game with the Horns, and with a reconstructed team gave a very good account of themselves. Field, who up to this mach had been playing a very erratic game forward, found his right place at centre half, and Carpenter took up his old position at centre forward. Whether or not these alterations gave the team more confidence certain it is that the improvement in the play, both of attack and defence, was very noticeable.

The visitors had to face a strong wind during the first half, but in spite of this more than held their own. Carpenter had the misfortune to be wrongly pulled up twice after beating the halves and when in good positions for shooting, owing to one of the Horns backs wearing a shirt of the same colour. There was no scoring in this half at all. Very early in the second, however, a smart piece of combination finished up with a pass from Field to Powdrill, who put his side one up with avery good shot.

A lot of midfield play followed and then O. Wray, at outside left, got hold and taking the ball up put in a shot from the touchline, and helped by a strong gust of wind the ball found its way under the bar. Thius was the second and last goal of the day registered. Nothing to speak of occurred afterwards and a pleasant game finished with the score 2-0 in favour of Stevenage Town.

The game was well contested from start to finish and was played in amost sportsmanlike manner. The referee had but little to do, and, with the exception of the early mistakes due to confusing players, gave satisfaction. The Stevenage defence was very sound, Field in particular being very successful in breaking up the combination of the opposing forwards. The improvement of the forwards, if maintained, will certainly mean a better goal average than at present, and it is hoped that advantage will be taken of it on Saturday when Stevenage meet Hitchin Town A in the Herts League competition.
