WELWYN V STEVENAGE TOWN
This county league match was played at Welwyn on Saturday before a very few spectators. Stevenage won the toss, and taking advantage of a very strong wind at once put pressure on the home goal, where Thody made a good clearance. The visitors returned and called upon Ashby to save a good shot, which he did well. Midfield play followed, neither team making much headway, until the visitors got away and forced two corners, from the last of which they scored an offside "goal." From the free-kick the home team got away and Hulse headed in, but Ansell cleared and transferred to midfield. Stevenage got away, and after a mix up on the right wing scored.
Resuming, a combined movement by the home left wingers brought play up and a good centre was sent in by E. Males, which his brother failed to convert, his shot going by. After this the visitors broke through and from a corner kick scored the second goal. From midfield Welwyn worked through and forced three corners in quick succession, but with no effect. At half-time the score was - Stevenage, 2; Welwyn, 0.
With the change of ends and the wind in their favour the home team had most of the play. Bird sent in a high shot which Parsons just managed to save, and a centre by Males was put by. The goal kick sent play to midfield, where Ranji got possession and with the aid of A. Males got through and centred. Hulse's shot hit the post, and the ball rebounding E. Ward slammed in, but Parsons saved at the expense of a corner and the ball was eventually put by. Carpenter took a run in the home team's half, but was checked by W. Ward. Getting down Welwyn forced a corner which was cleared. E. Males sent in a good shot, and Parsons in saving fell to the ground, and Males taking advantage of this immediately rushed in and scored.
Each side troubled the opposing goalkeeper once or twice befor E. Males got away and forced a corner. This was taken by the same player, and a scrimmage ensuing G. Adams scored. Even play then ruled up to the finish, and the game ended in a draw of two goals each. For Welwyn W. Ward and Thody were safe at back. All the halves played up well. In the forward line the left wing was slightly the stronger, although some good work was seen on the right.
For the visitors Parsons in goal was in fine form, Ansell was a sure kick at back. Field was the best of the halves. Carpenter played with dash all through, but was not at all dangerous owing to the defence of the opposing backs.
A Stevenage correspondent's report of this match begins in these words: - "A very poor game at Welwyn resulted in a draw of two goals each. Neither team was anything like up to form, and adding to that the state of the ground and weather, it was hardly fair to expect much in the way of good football. In the first half, with the wind with them, the visitors scored twice through Crouch and Carpenter, but previous to either of these goals being scored, Powdrill forced one off Thody, but was ruled offside. Piggott, playing outside left with Powdrill, was disabled quite early in the game by a charge from Pointon.
